M.M. Antokolsky is a realist sculptor, a graduate of the Russian Academy of Arts. He worked in the field of monumental and easel sculpture with historical, philosophical and ethical issues. The sculpture "Mephistopheles sitting on a rock" (second author's name "XIX century") was made in 1883. in 1898. at the World Exhibition in Venice, awarded the Great Gold Medal. Mephistopheles - the devil, the image of an evil spirit in folklore and artistic creativity of the peoples of Europe, a popular hero of works of literature and music of the 19th century. Mephistopheles is depicted sitting on a rock ledge in a complex closed pose. The hands and chin of the devil lie on the knee of the right leg, the foot of the right leg pulled up to the chest is under the bend of the knee of the left leg lowered down. The image is devoid of household accessories, therefore it is perceived as an allegory of Evil. The Kasli plant has been casting the sculpture since the beginning of the 20th century.
